1632 FAQ

Canon

All the stories are canon. All the mainline novels from Baen, all 124+ magazine issues, and the newest member of the family, GURPS Ring of Fire.

All canon.

They are all required to meet the same standards for canon, and they all go through the same review before publication.

There are multiple mechanisms for checking this. The first is that short stories are shared on BaensBar.net and a lot of people read them and make comments. The next is proofreaders who also check for canon.

But the critical step for them all – including GURPS – is that they are read by the Editor-in-Chief for 1632 & Beyond and keeper of the canon for the whole universe, Bjorn Hasseler.

No, we don’t know how he does it either.

Also, yes, that is a stock photo included with the theme, but it seems fitting so it’s staying.

I’ve read all the novels and short stories. Does GURPS have anything new?

Why yes, it does! In addition to five new maps created by Mike Knopp, the same man who does them for Baen and did them for Eric, there are a ton of great new materials!

There’s a timeline that goes from 1632 to 1637.

There are summaries of how the new timeline impacted different parts of the world.

There’s really just a ton of great information in this book. A lot is already canon, but it’s organized in a way that makes it easier to find. In addition to truly new information, there’s almost certainly details that you either never read or have forgotten.

Where can I buy GURPS Ring of Fire?

For now, online. There was a Backerkit that finished in late June 2026 but late pledges are still open as of Halloween 2026.

GURPS Ring of Fire is available both as a .pdf and as a hard cover book.

If you don’t already know GURPS and want to learn more, Steve Jackson Games has a FAQ on that. As of publication, the Fourth Edition (revised) is the most recent one. If you have an older version of GURPS, it is backwards-compatible.
